Refurbished iPhone Buying Guide by Model: Which Generation Is Actually Worth Buying in 2026?

by Ishaan Seth September, 2026

Usually, with refurbished iPhone buying guides, the rule is that as long as the model is still supported. This means that if it’s still receiving iOS updates from Apple and the phone’s body is not broken, it’s good to buy.

However, in 2026, we’re well past the point where we can ignore the impact of AI on our lives, including the devices we use and whether or not these devices can support AI performance, and the priority among these devices is our smartphones.

So, if you’re considering buying a refurbished iPhone, you have to add its ability to sustain AI to the list of things you check before buying. Otherwise, you’d be just paying for an iPhone just to use it for a short period of time. They can be good 'training wheels' as a first iPhone.

Refurbished iPhone buyers are either looking for the most future-proof option, looking for the best value for money, or have a fixed budget and want to get the best iPhone within this budget.

Whether you have a fixed budget or you’re looking for the most capable option available, we can help you get the best value for your money.

In this guide, we’re helping you take a thorough look at the full spectrum of factors you must keep in mind when choosing your refurbished iPhone.

what to check before you commit to an iphone model

Before committing to an iPhone model based on generalized descriptions, you need to identify your own needs for the iPhone. This way, you wouldn’t miss out on features that would’ve benefited you for the sake of additional savings, and you wouldn’t pay extra for features or specs that you won’t use.

So, first you need to make a realistic list of your current smartphone uses, and another for what you would actually use your next refurbished iPhone for.

The two lists are important because the first will give you an idea of the essential features and specs that you can’t compromise on because those are your current needs. The second list will give you room to grow your use with the upcoming iPhone without going overboard with unrealistic expectations. For example, if you’re not a content creator and don’t intend to become one in the next year, then editing videos is not a priority for your refurbished iPhone.

The rest of the aspects are regarding the iPhone being refurbished, and they include:

iOS support cycle

This is more important than most people realise; this is why it’s the first item on our list. iOS updates are not just about keeping up with the latest features that look cool; these updates are integral to the security of the iPhone and the safety of your data stored in it, from your social media accounts to your banking apps. An iPhone model that is out of the support cycle, meaning that it doesn’t get security updates anymore, is vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Battery health at purchase

One of the biggest benefits of a refurbished iPhone is that you can check its battery health without any third-party apps. Directly from the Settings app, you can view the actual battery health of the iPhone at the moment you’re buying it to estimate how long it will last. The minimum percentage for an iPhone battery health is 85%.

The available conditions for different models

Refurbished iPhone conditions are not consistent across different sellers. The naming, grading, and even descriptions are different from one seller to another. This issue is solved by carefully reading and understanding the grading and descriptions of the conditions that the seller you choose is providing.

The other aspect that will affect your choice of iPhone model is that not all iPhone models are available across different conditions or grades in the UK market due to the model’s age and how rare its replacement parts might be.

Price to value

This goes back to the original point of determining what you want from the iPhone. For example, if your day-to-day use doesn’t require Pro or Pro Max capabilities, then the baseline model would be the best value for the price of the refurbished iPhone.

the model-by-model breakdown: late 2026 edition

If you want an iPhone built for the AI era that will last for years both in terms of Apple Intelligence functionality and iOS updates, the entire lineup of the iPhone 17, iPhone 16, and the two Pro models of the iPhone 15, which are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, are your best choices. Here’s the breakdown:

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max is the sweet spot for Apple Intelligence (on-device AI) preparedness, as well as the iOS update cycle. This model is expected to receive regular iOS updates until 2030 and continue to receive security patches for two more years, up to 2032.

With this iPhone, you get the software updates, the newest AI features, and the hardware that can handle and run these updates not slow down due to them.

iPhone 15 Pro

In terms of performance and longevity, the refurbished iPhone 15 Pro is the more affordable option with the same longevity, performance, and software update potential as the iPhone 15 Pro Max. You can call it the best AI-entry iPhone with the A17 Pro chip, the same as the Pro Max’s, and, with ProMotion, it uses its battery efficiently while keeping high refresh rates when necessary.

iPhone 16 Lineup (including baseline iPhone 16)

While we had to exclude the baseline iPhone 15 from our list for AI preparedness, as it doesn’t really have the RAM capacity for it, the baseline iPhone 16 comes with 8 GB of RAM, which is the minimum requirement for what we’re expecting future software updates to require, both iOS and third-party apps. One of the pluses of the iPhone 16 lineup is that all models have a dedicated camera control button for photography and content creation purposes.

iPhone 17 Lineup (including baseline iPhone 17)

In the second half of 2026, the iPhone 17 lineup is still the latest in Apple’s creation and innovation. While these models are available brand-new, the refurbished iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 17e, or iPhone Air will all come at a much lower price and in good shape since they haven’t been used for long, and you’d still get the same iOS updates as the brand-new ones.

If, on the other hand, the phone is not going to be used for any AI purposes or the purchase is limited by a fixed budget, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are good choices. These two models are good for everyday basic tasks and even some heavy gaming. These are the iPhone models that will give you reliable performance and have at least 2-3 years of iOS updates coming to them:

  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus

iPhone 13 Series: Worth Buying With Caveats

While the iPhone 13’s entire lineup is expected to remain supported with iOS updates until 2027 or even 2028, we didn’t include it in our list for technical reasons. While the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max are going to get the newest iOS for another year, the slowdown that these iOS updates cause in these models immediately disqualifies them from running.

While the iPhone 13 lineup is still viable and still loved by many, we do advise proceeding with caution with this generation.

The iPhone 13 series can be a reasonable choice as a first iPhone or a budget secondary device, with the understanding that its AI capabilities are limited and its remaining support window is shorter than newer generations.

the refurbished iphone deal you should choose

Just as much as you need to define your iPhone needs to choose a model, you need to have a clear understanding of what the seller is offering with their refurbished iPhones. The first condition is that you must find every detail about the phone and the deal plainly and clearly stated on the seller’s website. Ambiguity in a refurbished iPhone deal is a definite NO.

Secondly, the battery health must be at least 85%. The seller should clearly state this, and you should check it in your iPhone’s Settings app once you receive it.

This brings us to the next condition, which is the returns and warranty policy. While the minimum requirement for a return period can be 14 days, QwikFone provides you with a 30-day return period with a full refund guarantee. Likewise, you might get other offers with only a 90-day or 6-month warranty period. At QwikFone, our warranty coverage is for 12 months, a full year.

So, choose the iPhone model that suits your needs, place the order, and enjoy the full experience at a reduced price.
