by Ishaan Seth June 4, 2020
To compare the OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is going to be difficult to do since both these devices are amazing in their own rights. The companies behind these devices sure know what their consumers are looking for in a smartphone in terms of screen size, battery, camera specs, and performance. Although each of these devices is appealing to a lot of people, when asked which one to get, it’s hard to determine which stands out more. That said, we made it a point to compare the two just to see how they fare.
Phone Design and Screen Size
When you compare the OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, the first thing that will come to mind is that they both look amazing. The display for these handheld devices encompasses their entire screen, with this tiny hole on top where the camera for selfie is located. The edges, sides, and rears of these two devices are curved to make them easier to hold. When you place the two together, it won’t be easy to identify which one is the 8 Pro and which one is the S20. Still, many are leaning to Samsung’s product because they find it more convenient and comfortable to hold.

The number of pixels per inch varies for these two. Samsung’s spec shows that their S20 Plus’ PPI is at 3,200 x 1,400 whereas the 8 Pro is only at 3,168 x 1,440. There is not much difference with regards to their visual performance. In addition, they have been given an IP68 rating. This means that these two gadgets can withstand exposure to dust and water at a certain depth only for thirty minutes or so.

Performance and Battery
When you compare OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus in terms of performance capabilities, you will be pleased to know that they are both using the Snapdragon 865 by Qualcomm. This processor has no difficulty running any applications or video games on any of these devices. If you are going for the basic model of the 8 Pro from OnePlus you will get 8GB worth of RAM which is smaller than S20 Plus’ 12GB. However, if you can dish out $100 more for the 8 Pro, you can upgrade the RAM to 12GB plus 256GB of storage. Only the S20 Plus has the option for expansion using microSD whether it is new one or refurbished phone from this website.

The battery is almost the same between these two at 4,5100 mAh and 4,500 mAh for 8 Pro and S20 Plus respectively. What this means is that these two smartphones are quite capable of handling heavy usage without the need for charging constantly. Both these devices come with fast-charging capabilities, but OnePlus charges a bit faster thanks to its 30W charger.
Camera Specs
These two appear evenly matched with their camera’s specifications. However, there are differences worth noting. For starters, the telephoto lens of S20 Plus has a megapixel of 64 which is considerably better compared to the 8MP version of the 8 Pro.

In terms of lenses for wide and ultra-wide shots, 8 Pro wins this round because it has 48MP for both these lenses. Basically, with these lenses, you are getting plenty of texture and even detail for each shot that you take. Of course, Samsung has taken their camera’s specs up a notch because of its unique sensor for time-of-flight. What this means is that you will get more realistic photos of Samsung's phone compared to the other.

The S20 Plus by Samsung can take up to 8K videos whereas the 8 Pro can only do 4K. If you want a phone to handle both taking great shots and videos, this is a criterion to consider.
Let’s talk about the software for these two. The S20 Pro is operating with Android 10 plus their own One UI 2.0 making the user interface simpler and easier to use. The 8 Pro is also running on Android 10 and is currently using the Oxygen operating system 10.5 which makes the device quick to navigate. The latter has this slide-in screen, which is handled by Google’s Assistant. Know how to use google assistant. It is also here where you will find updates on the weather and current events. When talking about updates, the 8 Pro seems to be doing it much better than what Samsung is capable of.
Additional Features
The good news is that both these models are designed to be ready for 5G network which is a good deal already. Although there are some drawbacks to this latest network, we can expect it to change in the coming years.

Both these devices do not have much in terms of additional features, but those that they already have are worth taking note of. For example, the S20 Plus has the DeX mode and the sensor for time-of-flight which gives more depth to your shots. In the 8 Pro by OnePlus, you will get a fun Color Filter which gives you more chances of being creative with your shots.

Samsung has outstripped OnePlus when talking about video capabilities since the S20 Plus can handle 8K video already. And when you combine this feature with the depth sensor, hands down, S20 Plus is worth checking out.
For only $1,200, you will be able to purchase the S20 Plus from different retail outlets as well as mobile phone carriers. To go for the 512GB model, you will be spending up to $1,350 for it. For those who are considering getting the 8 Pro from OnePlus, you can get its base model for just $900 where you can already enjoy 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Add an extra $100, and you can upgrade it to 12GB worth of RAM and 256GB storage. However, in terms of availability, the OnePlus is not sold widely.

Now that you have an idea of how these two compare to one another, it is easier to decide which one to get for your needs. After all, these two are great in several ways, but it all boils down to your preferences, budget, and availability of these devices too.
